Sunny Deol’s latest action film Jaat has finally hit the theatres, but the opening day box office collection has taken many by surprise. According to several reports, Jaat managed to collect ₹9.50 crore on Day 1—a decent figure on its own, yet a far cry from the massive ₹40 crore that Gadar 2 had raked in on its debut day back in 2023. The film, despite its high-octane action and patriotic theme, has started slow and currently holds just 25% of the opening power Gadar 2 had demonstrated.
As per Sacnilk.com, the overall Hindi occupancy for Jaat on Thursday stood at 12.89%, with relatively stronger viewership recorded in cities like Jaipur and Chennai. These pockets of interest, however, haven’t translated into pan-India success—at least not yet. In comparison, Salman Khan’s recent film Sikandar opened with ₹26 crore on its first day, even though it was panned for its weak storyline and performances. That makes Jaat’s numbers look even more underwhelming for a film that had been heavily promoted as Sunny Deol’s next big screen comeback.
Directed by Gopichand Malineni and backed by production houses People Media Factory and Mythri Movie Makers, Jaat features a strong ensemble cast including Saiyami Kher, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh. While Sunny Deol carries the film with his trademark intensity, critics and early viewers have noted that the story fails to bring anything fresh to the table. Still, the cast believes the heart of the film lies in its ability to connect emotionally with the audience, regardless of the critics’ scorecards.
At a recent promotional event, Randeep Hooda stated, “Yes, reviews matter. But the biggest review is how many people the story emotionally touches. That’s what defines success.” Co-star Vineet Kumar Singh echoed similar thoughts, expressing hope that Jaat will gain momentum through positive word-of-mouth, especially in tier-2 and rural cities where Sunny’s fan base remains strong.
But industry insiders are divided. Some believe the film’s lukewarm start is the result of poor timing, with recent Hindi releases saturating the market. Others point to the lack of novelty and limited pre-release promotions. In an age where digital marketing drives ticket sales, Jaat struggled to make noise on social media platforms—unlike the marketing blitz that accompanied Gadar 2.
Trade analysts are, however, not completely ruling out the film’s chances. With the weekend ahead, there’s still room for recovery if the audience responds well to the emotional drama and action-packed sequences. “It’s not about Day 1 anymore. If the film emotionally connects, the box office curve can still bend upward,” said trade expert Ramesh Bala.
At the end of the day, Jaat is not a complete flop, but it hasn’t set the box office on fire either. It finds itself in a tricky position—needing strong weekend collections and positive viewer response to stay afloat in a highly competitive market. For now, it’s a cautious wait-and-watch for the makers and fans alike.
