World Pharmacist Day 2024: Celebrating the Pillars of Global Health

World Pharmacist Day 2024

On September 25, 2024, the world will come together to celebrate World Pharmacist Day, a special occasion that highlights the pivotal role pharmacists play in global healthcare. This year’s theme, “Meeting Global Health Needs,” emphasizes the essential contributions of pharmacists in ensuring safe and effective healthcare for all.

The Significance of World Pharmacist Day

Founded by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) in 2009, World Pharmacist Day commemorates the establishment of FIP on September 25, 1912. The aim of this day is to increase public awareness of the importance of pharmacists in healthcare systems across the globe. Pharmacists play a crucial role in promoting patient safety, ensuring the proper use of medicines, and educating the public about health and wellness.

In India, this day has been officially celebrated since 2013, when the inaugural event took place in New Delhi. Over the years, the country has recognized the invaluable contributions pharmacists make to society, both in research and in ensuring that life-saving medicines are available and used safely.

Pharmacy Education in India

India’s pharmaceutical education system has a rich history. The first pharmacy college in Asia was established in Goa in 1842. Mahadeva Lal Schroff, often referred to as the Father of Pharmacy Education in India, introduced the three-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) course in 1932 at Banaras Hindu University. Today, India offers a range of pharmacy courses, including B.Pharm, M.Pharm, and Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) programs, which train professionals to excel in various areas such as drug research, manufacturing, and clinical trials.

Pharmacists: Pioneers in Drug Research and Manufacturing

Pharmacists are not just limited to dispensing medicines; they are also at the forefront of drug research, formulation, and development. From discovering new drug molecules to overseeing clinical trials, pharmacists collaborate with doctors and pharmaceutical companies to ensure the safety and efficacy of new treatments. With advancements in artificial intelligence and biotechnology, pharmacists are also contributing to the future of medicine, including personalized therapies and new drug delivery systems.

Honoring Pharmacists’ Contributions

World Pharmacist Day serves as a reminder of the countless ways in which pharmacists contribute to society’s well-being. This year, Kerala’s pharmacy community is dedicating the day to the memory of the late Dr. Muhammad Majeed, a pioneering figure in the nutraceutical industry. Dr. Majeed, known as the Father of Nutraceuticals, held over 500 patents and founded Sami Labs and Sabinsa Corporation, which have made significant strides in both the Indian and international pharmaceutical industries.

Celebrating World Pharmacist Day 2024

On this day, we extend our gratitude to pharmacists worldwide for their unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes. Their knowledge, professionalism, and compassion continue to shape the future of healthcare, ensuring that patients receive the care they deserve.

Happy World Pharmacist Day!
