Akriti Chopra, co-founder and Chief People Officer (CPO) of Zomato Ltd, has resigned from her position to explore new opportunities, according to the company’s Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) filing on September 27, 2024. Chopra has been a key figure at the online food delivery giant since 2011 and has played a pivotal role in shaping Zomato’s legal and financial structure during her tenure.
The filing revealed that Chopra’s resignation will be effective immediately. In her 13-year career at Zomato, she transitioned from senior finance roles to eventually becoming the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) before taking on the CPO role. Her leadership in scaling Zomato’s legal and finance teams has been instrumental to the company’s growth, especially during its initial public offering (IPO) in 2021.
Zomato’s Leadership Changes
Chopra’s exit is the latest in a string of high-level departures at Zomato. Earlier this year, Gunjan Patidar, the company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), stepped down after more than a decade at the company. In November 2022, co-founder Mohit Gupta also resigned after leading the food delivery business as CEO. These leadership changes come at a time when Zomato has experienced significant stock growth, with shares surging 369% over the last two years.
Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal expressed his appreciation for Chopra’s contributions, highlighting her integral role in the company’s development from a startup to a major player in the online food delivery industry. Goyal also addressed concerns that had previously surfaced regarding a potential conflict of interest, given Chopra’s marriage to Blinkit founder Albinder Dhindsa. He reassured stakeholders that Chopra had no involvement in discussions or decisions related to Zomato’s acquisition of Blinkit in 2022.
Zomato’s Market Impact
Following the news of Chopra’s resignation, Zomato’s shares saw a slight dip, closing 1.97% lower at ₹278.25 after the market session on Friday. However, the company’s stock has demonstrated strong performance overall, with a nearly 200% surge in the last year alone. Despite the leadership shake-ups, Zomato continues to hold a steady position in India’s fast-growing online food and grocery delivery market.
As Akriti Chopra moves on to explore other interests, her departure marks the end of an era at Zomato, a company she helped build from the ground up.
