Two Diwali blockbusters – Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again and Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 – have been doing huge business at the box office, locking horns with both of them crossing the coveted ₹100 crore mark during their opening weekend.
Singham Again, featuring Ajay Devgn and Deepika Padukone, had a respectable opening at ₹43.70 crore and held through the weekend. By Sunday, the film had already moved past ₹121 crore; in Hindi-speaking territories it was still at a level of 52.55% occupancy. The Singham series three also showed strong increases from the second installment in its powerhouses Maharashtra and Gujarat. The film also had special appearances by stars like Ranveer Singh and Tiger Shroff, which made it more desirable among lovers of action movies, with powerhouse performances from Devgn, Padukone, and Akshay Kumar.
The Kartik Aaryan and Vidya Balan-starrer Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 also had a tremendous run. The horror-comedy raked in ₹35.5 crore on day one and maintained the tempo to touch ₹106 crore by Sunday. It was a direct competition with Singham Again, but the genre proved to be a plus point for Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 as people looked out for something with the combination of comedy and horror. Aaryan’s portion, along with Triptii Dimri and Madhuri Dixit in prominent parts, made sure that fans of the franchise didn’t miss this one too, which was an important aspect that made the film one of the best-rated in Aaryan’s career.
Industry analysts feel that the next few days are going to be a test of both films. How does Monday go at the box office? Is Singham Again going to continue rolling with action or will Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and its comedy and horror continue to pull the audience in for the next few weeks? As international films like Wicked and Gladiator 2 prepare for release, the war on the Bollywood silver screen gets only hotter.
The clash between Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 in the event of Diwali has added much hype to Indian cinemas, promising fun closure to the year for Bollywood.
