OpenAI unveiled a search tool called SearchGPT powered by AI

OpenAI has now launched SearchGPT, a next-generation search utility that will be baked into ChatGPT to challenge the search behemoths like Google. While speaking during Diwali, CEO Sam Altman has revealed that SearchGPT promises users information in a timely and accurate manner as available on the web directly and combines the conversational usability of ChatGPT with real-time data. SearchGPT is initially available only to ChatGPT Plus users, but the company would eventually roll it out for its enterprise, education, and free users.

What is SearchGPT?

SearchGPT is an instant response application powered by OpenAI’s advanced GPT-4 model. It gives immediate answers along with relevant sources. Queries can be typed, and answers will follow, coupled with embedded citations that facilitate more questions or what may be referred to as ‘follow-up’ questions to replicate the live conversation. The interplay of the AI conversational model with internet connectivity can be used to provide updates of sports scores, stock prices, local news, and much more.

Smart Step by OpenAI Against Google

OpenAI directly competes with Google in its dominance in search through SearchGPT. This new competitor will allow users to have easier access to authentic web pages without many advertisements and far more streamlined answers. This shows that OpenAI has now joined the fray of AI-based search, which has hitherto been the playing ground of Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini.

How Does SearchGPT Differ From Its Competitors?

  1. Live Results: This is the first difference: while the old ChatGPT had limited data up to a knowledge cutoff date, the users can now get live results of latest web results.
  2. Clutter-Free and Ad-Free Interface: This search engine does not contain ads or clutter like other search engines.
  3. Publisher Partnerships: OpenAI has partnered with top publishers such as Hearst and News Corp., so the information that comes from here is credible, and it is easy to get publisher sites.

According to OpenAI’s Search Lead, Adam Fry, the search tool was aimed at reducing the common issue of misinformation issues that typically arise in AI responses. The system is still in the early stages, but Fry is quick to reassure users who have seen improvements in areas critical to accuracy, such as election data.

How AI-Powered Search Changed Information Access

OpenAI has entered the fray in AI-driven search innovations, with Meta, Google, and Microsoft pushing similar tools as SearchGPT was launched. This evolution of search technology promises users more control, less ad saturation, and an intuitive approach to online information, potentially transforming how people engage with search engines.

As SearchGPT opens up to more people, it will be great to see how it helps in reshaping the face of online search in this new era of increasing reliance on AI.
