Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, known for his diverse roles in Bollywood classics like Mrigayaa, Surakshaa, Disco Dancer, and Dance Dance, has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. This honor, considered the highest recognition in Indian cinema, will be presented to the 74-year-old actor at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024.

The announcement, made by Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on September 30, 2024, celebrates Chakraborty’s remarkable contribution to Indian cinema. In his message on X, the minister praised Mithun Da’s cinematic journey as an inspiration to generations, reflecting the legendary actor’s impact over a career spanning more than four decades.

Mithun’s Emotional Response

Expressing his surprise and gratitude, Mithun Chakraborty shared that receiving this prestigious award was beyond his wildest dreams. Speaking to ANI, he said, “I have no language to express how I feel. Na main hass sakta hun, na khushi mein ro sakta hun (I cannot smile, nor can I cry in happiness).” He further reflected on his humble beginnings in Kolkata, stating, “A boy from the footpaths of Kolkata winning such an honour…I could not have imagined this.”

The actor dedicated the award to his family and fans, recognizing their unwavering support throughout his career.

A Legacy of Excellence

Mithun Chakraborty’s journey in the film industry began with his National Award-winning debut in Mrigayaa (1976), directed by Mrinal Sen. Over the years, he became a household name with blockbuster hits, especially in the 1980s, when he earned the title of “Disco Dancer” for his electrifying performances and dance moves.

Earlier this year, Mithun was also honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, adding another feather to his illustrious career.
