Government Raises Minimum Wages for Workers in Agriculture and Industry Ahead of Festive Season

In a significant move ahead of the festive season, the Union Government has announced a hike in the minimum wages for workers in key sectors, including agriculture, construction, and mining. The revision will come into effect from October 1, 2024, and aims to provide relief to workers amid rising living costs.

The hike in wages, as per the new notification, will benefit workers involved in various activities such as building construction, security, housekeeping, janitorial work, and agricultural labor. The increase in wages is based on the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, which empowers both central and state governments to revise wage floors.

Revised Wages Breakdown:

  • Unskilled Workers: Will now receive ₹783 per day or ₹20,358 per month.
  • Semi-skilled Workers: Daily wages are set at ₹868, or ₹22,568 monthly.
  • Skilled and Clerical Workers: The rate is now ₹954 per day or ₹24,804 per month.
  • Highly Skilled Workers and Security with Arms: Wages have been raised to ₹1,035 per day or ₹26,910 per month.

The government stated that this adjustment in wages is linked to the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) to help workers deal with inflation, particularly the 2.40-point increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for industrial workers. This increase is in line with the government’s regular wage revisions, which take place twice a year, ensuring wages remain in step with inflationary trends.

This wage hike is seen as a much-needed relief for millions of workers employed in informal sectors as they prepare for the festive season ahead.
