Mumbai, October 15, 2024: In a significant move to honor the legacy of the late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, the Maharashtra government has decided to rename the Maharashtra State Skills Development University as the Ratan Tata Maharashtra State Skills Development University. The decision, announced by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a state cabinet meeting, comes shortly after Tata’s passing on October 9 at the age of 86.
Honoring Ratan Tata’s Legacy
Ratan Tata’s immense contributions to India’s industrial and educational landscape have long been recognized. In his lifetime, he transformed the Tata Group into a global conglomerate while also making substantial strides in philanthropy, especially in education and skills development. The renaming of the university is seen as a fitting tribute to his vision and dedication to empowering India’s youth through skill-based education.
The Maharashtra State Skills Development University, established in 2022, offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs focused on practical skills and entrepreneurship, with a particular emphasis on rural development. It is the first government-run institution of its kind in the state, designed to enhance employability and foster entrepreneurial spirit among students.
Bharat Ratna Proposal
Earlier, the Maharashtra Cabinet passed a resolution proposing that Ratan Tata be conferred with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, for his unparalleled contributions to the nation. This proposal underscores the deep respect and admiration that Tata commanded across political and business circles.
A Lifetime of Achievements
Born on December 28, 1937, Ratan Tata served as the Chairman of Tata Sons from 1991 to 2012, leading the group’s expansion into various industries, including automotive, IT, and steel. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 for his services to trade and industry, further solidifying his status as one of India’s most respected leaders.
The university’s renaming follows several other honors dedicated to Tata, including the Udyog Ratna Award, which recognizes significant contributions to industrial development. The award was named after Ratan Tata, and he was its first recipient. Additionally, the Udyog Bhavan at Charni Road will also bear his name.
Upcoming Maharashtra Elections and Government Announcements
Ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, the state government has made several key announcements. Among them is the toll waiver for light motor vehicles at all five toll booths for entry into Mumbai, effective from midnight on Monday, easing the burden on commuters.
In other news, the Maharashtra Cabinet approved an increase in the salaries of D.Ed. and B.Ed. teachers in Madrasas, a move aimed at improving the quality of education in minority institutions. Teachers with D.Ed. degrees will now earn Rs 16,000 per month, up from Rs 6,000, while B.Ed. teachers’ salaries will rise from Rs 8,000 to Rs 18,000 per month.
