Oct 9: Veteran Malayalam actor TP Madhavan, a prominent figure in the Malayalam film industry and the first General Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), passed away today at a private hospital in Kollam. He was 88. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

TP Madhavan had an illustrious career spanning over four decades, during which he appeared in more than 600 films. Starting his acting journey at the age of 40, he made his debut in the 1975 film Raagam. Initially cast in villainous roles, he eventually transitioned to comic and character roles, earning widespread acclaim for his versatility.

Remembering a Cinema Legend

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, TP Madhavan became a beloved figure in Malayalam cinema. His ability to portray a variety of roles, from villains to comedic and character parts, won him a dedicated fan base. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences, highlighting Madhavan’s significant contributions to the Malayalam film industry. “He portrayed a wide range of characters with finesse, and his work will be remembered by generations,” Vijayan stated.

In addition to his acting career, Madhavan played a pivotal role in the formation of AMMA, serving as its first General Secretary. Prior to his foray into acting, Madhavan ran advertising agencies in Mumbai and Kolkata.

A Life of Challenges and Triumphs

In his later years, TP Madhavan was diagnosed with amnesia, which brought an end to his acting career. Despite the challenges posed by his condition, he continued to remain active in the Malayalam television industry and spent his final days at Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram.

For his outstanding contributions to Malayalam cinema, TP Madhavan was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Ramu Karyat Award and the Prem Nazir Award.

TP Madhavan is survived by his daughter, Devika, and his son, Raja Krishna Menon, a well-known Bollywood director famous for films like Airlift, Chef, and Pippa.

As the Malayalam film fraternity and fans mourn the loss of this veteran actor, his legacy will continue to live on through the many unforgettable roles he played on screen.
